KARACHI: Parliamentary body for relief work urged

KARACHI, Nov 13: Jamaat-i-Islami, Sindh, on Sunday demanded that the relief and rehabilitation operation for earthquake survivors be carried out through a committee of parliamentarians in collaboration with all political parties.

It also demanded that the nation be kept informed of the facts and figures with regard to the losses in earthquake.

The demands came at a meeting of JI Sindh held in Quba Auditorium here on Sunday. The party’s provincial Amir Dr Mumtaz Memon chaired the meeting which was attended by its district chiefs in Sindh.

The meeting reviewed the political situation prevailing in the country, particularly Sindh, as well as relief activities being carried out for quake victims, besides party affairs.

It decided to hold a JI Sindh convention in March next year.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mumtaz Memon said people of Sindh had extended all out support to their brethren in need. He noted that the JI and its welfare wing Al-Khidmat had so far dispatched relief goods worth about Rs2 billion and 20 tons of medicines, and generated Rs100 million cash donations for the victims. He said that over 1,000 JI volunteers were rendering their services in quake-stricken areas.

He accused the government of failing to ensure quick relief and rehabilitation work in the quake-hit region. He praised army’s role in this regard, but observed that army alone could not accomplish this task.

The JI leader urged the government to form parliamentary committees with local representatives to ensure fair distribution of aid and proper rehabilitation of survivors. He also appealed to people to continue to contribute to the relief funds and efforts.

Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, Abdul Ghaffar Umer, Rashid Nasim, Hafiz Nasrullah Aziz and Nawab Mujahid Baloch were also present at the meeting.—PPI
