KARACHI: Training for midwives

KARACHI, Nov 13: The Sobhraj Maternity Hospital of the City District Government Karachi has evolved a ‘Continuous Medical Education’ programme for midwives. Prof Shabeen Naz Masood told APP here on Sunday said the country was experiencing one of the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates across the globe and an efficient and foolproof mechanism was needed to address the situation.

“It is with the very motive that we, in close coordination with UNICEF, have arranged the programme for midwives and labour room heads from different hospitals,” she said.

In reply to a question, she said the idea was to handle the situation through the provision of appropriately trained midwives accessible to pregnant women in general, in both rural and urban areas.

“We, therefore have embarked upon a programme under which four training programmes a year are being arranged,” Dr Shabeen said.
