KARACHI: PPP slams reopening of language, other issues

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 11: The Sindh Council of the Pakistan People’s Party has cautioned against reopening of the issues already settled in the 1972 Language Act which, it claimed, was one of the achievements of the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and had helped in promoting amity and understanding among all segments of the Sindh population.

At its meeting on Thursday, the council adopted a resolution, the text of which was released here on Friday by the party’s provincial information secretary Waqar Mehdi.

The council observed that the reopening of the sensitive issue at this time was in fact a conspiracy against the unity of the country and Sindh and the people of this province. It feared that if it was not checked now, then once again it would breed misunderstanding and acrimony and might lead to violence.

In this context, the meeting also slammed the role of Sindh governor and termed it detrimental to amity and brotherhood among the people.

Another resolution slammed the government’s alleged failure in providing relief to the earthquake victims and in evacuating the injured in time. The meeting which had extensively reviewed the situation, particularly with reference to the party’s role in the humanitarian task, and vowed to continue its relief and rehabilitation effort and establish new camps on an urgent basis.

It alleged that the government functionaries were mainly focusing their activity for the photo session. It appealed the people to continue their support to the victims of earthquake.

The meeting also offered condolences for those perished in the quake.

It dubbed the regime as ‘unrepresentative’ and accused it of trying to suppress facts about the extent of losses and the aid received and spent so far.

Through a resolution, it said that the government should accept its failure and step down to pave the way for fresh elections under an independent Election Commission to avert pre- and post-poll rigging and manipulation, as well as harassment of opposition. It termed the recent local government election a ‘fraud’ in which opposition candidates for nazim and naib nazim slots and scores candidates for councillor’s seat had been kidnapped and implicated in false cases.

Through another resolution, the meeting reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Ms Benazir Bhutto and maintained that she was the only popular leader who could steer the country through testing times and ensure true and enduring democratic dispensation in the country. The meeting also expressed confidence in the leadership of the provincial chief Syed Qaim Ali Shah.

Through yet another resolution, the meeting demanded that all fake cases instituted against Ms Bhutto on political basis be withdrawn immediately and unconditionally. It also demanded that Ms Bhutto be allowed to return to the country so that the country could be saved from deteriorating law and order situation, soaring price and unemployment.

The PPP Sindh Council decided to observe the party’s founding day on Nov 30 and hold a ceremony in Hyderabad which would also be attended by central leaders. It also decided to expedite the process of party reorganization at UC and city council levels.

The meeting condemned the recent attack on MPA Akhtar Jadoon and maintained that the incident was reflective of appalling law and order situation in the province where terrorist and hoodlums were moving unchecked.
