Wang sets two world records
DOHA, Nov 10: China’s Mingjuan Wang set two world records in the women’s 48kg class on way to the gold medal at the Centennial Weightlifting World Championships on Wednesday.
The pint-sized Wang lifted a total of 213 kilos which comfortably helped her retain the title she won at the Vancouver World Championships two years ago, the second placed Pensiri Saelaw of Thailand finishing second, a staggering 15 kilos behind on 198.
Aree Wiraathawaron, also of Thailand, finished third a further five kilos behind on 193 failing to get past the 108 kilo mark in the clean and jerk.
Wang’s world recond of 213 was three klios better than the previous world record held by Trukey’s Olympic champion Nurcan Taylan who set the mark at Athens last year.
Turkey is sitting out a preliminary ban at the World Championships for a series of breaches during out-of-competition doping controls.
Wang’s clean and jerk best of 118, recorded at her third attempt, shattered the previous mark of 117 klios set by Lian Yang at the recent East Asian Games in Macau.
Later in the men’s 56kg category Chinese Taipei’s Wang Shin-Yuan heaved a total of 281 kilos to take the gold by a one kilo margin with South Korea’s Lee Jong Hoon claiming the silver with 280.
Vietnam’s Tuan Hoang Anh was third after lifting 279 kilos in a close contest.
Of the medal winners, the Vietnamese had the best lift of 126 kilos in the snatch, but he could only manage 153 kilos in the clean and jerk which put paid to his gold winning ambitions.
Champion Shin-Yuan lifted 156 kilos in the clean and jerk and silver medallist Jong-Hoon produced a lift of 155 that narrowly helped them get the better of Tuan.
However, the competition was devoid of the usual drama because of the non-participation of multiple world and Olympic champion Halil Mutlu who is engaged in a personal struggle after suspicious levels of testosterone were detected in his system during the European Championships in April.
Mutlu, who has ruled the event for years and holds the world records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total, will be appearing at a hearing in Doha and could face a two year ban if found guilty of deliberate doping.—AFP
