Qazi slams appointment of army men on key posts
ISLAMABAD, Nov 9: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) president Qazi Hussain Ahmed has criticized Gen Pervez Musharraf for appointing military men on key positions in various institutions.
Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, he said the government had contacted the MMA on the issue of the appointment of chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, but the MMA had told it that it did not want to get involved in any negotiations on the issue.
The MMA chief alleged that Gen Musharraf had been following the US diktats.
He also criticized the decision to allow Nato forces to carry out relief work in the quake-affected areas.
He asked the military to go back to the barracks and let the civilians rule the country. He said that relief and rehabilitation operations should be supervised by parliament instead of generals.
Referring to allegations levelled by Muttahida Qaumi Movement that Jamaat-i-Islami had been sabotaging its relief activities, Qazi Hussain Ahmed said MQM wanted to convert Muzaffarabad into another Karachi.
He said that Al-Khidmat Foundation had so far spent Rs1.5 billion on relief and rehabilitation operations in Azad Kashmir.
Online adds: Meanwhile, talking to the head of a Red Cross delegation, Pascal Mosley, which met him on Wednesday, the MMA president said that relocation of quake-affected people to other areas might create more trouble.
He appreciated the relief activities being carried out by the Red Cross and said that Pakistan needed more assistance from the international community.
Mr Mosley said that his organization was engaged in relief activities in distant parts of quake-hit areas.
He said the purpose of their stay in Pakistan was rehabilitation of quake-affected people and added that they would leave the country soon after completing the task.
