MQM and IJT trade allegations after report of clash

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUZAFFARABAD, Nov 6: Activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) clashed at a makeshift camp of earthquake survivors in the AJK capital on Thursday evening but there was no report of any casualty.

MQM MNA Kunwar Khalid Younas alleged that around 60 IJT activist pelted on a tented village set up by his party at the University College ground with stons an hour after Iftar.

“They uprooted our flags and trampled them, asking our workers to pack up,” he told Dawn by telephone, further alleging that the IJT activists also misbehaved with quake survivors in the camp.

The MQM has established its base-camp at the shrine of Sain Sehali Sarkar near the devastated building of the local press club. According to Mr Younas, 25 to 30 party workers, including doctors, are serving quake-hit people in Muzaffarabad.

“We exercised restraint and urged AJK government officials to take action against the miscreants, he said.

However, when contacted, IJT office-bearer Tahir Akbar denied that any such incident had taken place in the camp where his organisation was already running a school for child survivors.

He said the IJT had organised a function for these children which was also attended by some MQM men.

“I wonder why they have cooked up this story. I request them not to introduce their Karachi-style politics in Kashmir where people are already bedevilled by the worst-ever tragedy,” he said.

This correspondent also contacted a police officer who said he had no information of any such incident.
