Last-ball win for SSGC

KARACHI, Nov 2: In a sensational last-ball finish, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) clinched the 20th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan Festival trophy defeating Cantt Sports CC by one wicket on Wednesday.

Sohail Khan scored the winning runs of the final ball to end a pulsating final.

Requiring two runs at the start of the final over, SSGC lost the wicket of Abdul Qadir to the first ball off leg-spinner Ijaz Ahmed, two deliveries later Adnan Malik was run out for a duck.

Chasing 194, SSGC were off to another good start with Ashraf Ali (31) and Mohammad Zafar (42) putting on 62 for the opening stand.

Ashraf was later declared the best batsman of the tournament.

Agha Sabir (31) and Zeeshan Pervez (45) then shared a third-wicket partnership of 60 to put their side firmly in control.

But five wickets fell for the addition of 37 runs with off-spinner Atif Maqbool, who was adjudged the tournament’s best bowler, taking two as Cantt Sports staged a comeback.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Cantt Sports owed their total of 193 for nine to another splendid knock by Afsar Nawaz, who contributed a 52-ball 87 with the aid of eight boundaries and three sixes.

The only notable partnership in the innings was provided by Afsar and opener Nadeem Tariq, who added 74 for the third-wicket. Nadeem slammed six boundaries in scoring 44.

Haris Ayaz, was the outstanding performer with a haul of four for 33, including three in one over. His fine work earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.

Nadeem Shaikh of A.O.CC was declared the Man-of-the-Tournament while other individual awards were given to Omar CC’s Tariq Murad (best fielder) and Ahmed Zeeshan Malik of Tapal CC (best wicket-keeper).

CANTT SPORTS CC 193-9 in 25 overs (Afsar Nawaz 87, Nadeem Tariq 44; Haris Ayaz 4-33, Abdul Qadir 2-33); SSGC 194-9 in 25 overs (Zeeshan Pervez 45, Mohammad Zafar 42, Ashraf Ali 31, Agha Sabir 31; Jaffar Qureshi 2-25, Atif Maqbool 2-30).
