Relief goods continue to pour in

ISLAMABAD, Nov 2: The second consignment of 500 winterized tents donated by the government of Japan arrived at Chaklala airbase on Wednesday. The Japanese government has dispatched the first consignment of 5,000 water tanks on October 26, said a press release of the Japanese embassy.

Meanwhile parliamentarians belonging to the Communist Party of Japan collected 8.33 million yen ($83,300) cash donations from the public during last two weeks for the October 8 quake victims.

The chairman of the Communist Party Central Committee, Kazuo Shii presented a cheque of the donations to Ambassador Kamran Niaz in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The Pakistan embassy has also raised yen 120 million (Rs64,000,000) donation — 70 million yen cash and 50 million yen checks/pledges — for quake victims. Sixty per cent of the total donations has been transferred to the President’s relief fund.

The government of Japan had immediately dispatched goods worth 25 million yen ($238,000) to the affected areas on Oct 11, a Japanese rescue team, a medical team to Battagram as well as 6 helicopters operated by Japan Self Defence Forces (JSDF). The Japanese government has also pledged an emergency grant aid of $20 million for disaster goods well as for the relief operation. Of the total amount $8 million has already been given to the UN.

ECO: The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) on Tuesday contributed $50,000 to the President’s Relief Fund.

A cheque on behalf of the 10 member regional economic organization was presented to the ambassador of Pakistan in Tehran, says a press release here.

The secretary general also contributed an additional amount of $2,108 on behalf of the ECO Secretariat staff members.

China has sent a doctors team besides medical equipment while Kuwait has sent full size 150 tents to be utilized in the affected areas for setting up field schools and mobile hospitals.

TURKISH TEAM: A five-member technical team consisting of geologists and seismologists from the Housing Development Administration of the Turkish Prime Minister arrived here.
