PESHAWAR, Nov 2: The Peshawar High Court on Wednesday set aside the conviction of a former executive engineer in the communication and works department, Zafar Baig Bettani, and remanded the case to the accountability court for retrial.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Ijazul Hassan and Justice Ejaz Afzal pronounced that the trial court had overlooked various legal points while convicting the appellant.

The bench also granted bail to the petitioner on submission of two sureties of Rs30 million each.

Through an appeal, Mr Bettani had challenged his conviction by the accountability court and had also filed a petition for bail.

Mr Bettani was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on May 7, 2001, and tried on the charge of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
