CWS continues relief work in Balakot

ISLAMABAD, Nov 2: The Church World Service-Pak-istan/Afghanistan (CWS-P/A) on Wednesday continued its relief operations despite severe weather and land conditions. The CWS has sent relief material to Bisham and distributed 100 shelter kits in Hassa village near Balakot.

The CWS, in an effort to put a sense of festivity among the survivors, has decided to distribute gifts and sweets among the camp residents.

As part of its psycho-social care programme for the survivors of the devastated quake, the CWS has made short radio ads aiming to assure the listeners that they have internal resilience and strength. They are encouraging and informative-including how people may be feeling as well as how they may cope.

These public service messages would be broadcast on local radio stations in Islamabad and Abbottabad for two weeks.

The CWS workers said in the tent village in Bisyan an increasing number of children are seeking shelter with no elders to support them.

The CWS is now expanding the tent village to provide shelter and medical services for 2,450 of the most vulnerable survivors. The Church of Pakistan will provide medical services within the camp.

The world aid agencies and the government are now racing against time to rescue and bring aid to some 800,000 people still homeless before winter’s killing onslaught descends in the next couple of weeks in the remote Himalayan area.

In addition to emergency relief, CWS has already started providing psycho-social services to quake survivors, specially the children.

The CWS has so far delivered 62,075 tents to the affected people. Due to impassable roadways there are 480 villages that are still inaccessible in Battagram, Mansehra, Shangla, Kohistan, and Abbottabad.

The CWS and its partners have so far distributed 3,185 shelter kits to 22,295 individuals and food packages for almost 18,000 individuals, the release said.

WIMWT: Dr Syed Ali Akbar of Kings College, London, working as medical coordinator, World Islamic Mission Welfare Trust, has arranged a setup in Holy Family Hospital along with Dr Shams Tabraiz, Orthopaedic Surgeon, RMC Alumni, and Dr Adnan Majeed for operations of the injured victims of the earthquake.

For this purpose, all facilities are being provided by the administration of the hospital. So far they have managed to save many lives and have promoted a new feeling of hope.

The trust has already established free medical units at Abbasspur and Rawalakot. In Abbottabad, Al-Syed Hospital, Mansehra Road will act as a base camp.

NBP: The donations for the earthquake victims collected by National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in the President’s Relief Fund, till Wednesday crossed Rs1 billion, a press release said.

The amount includes donations by NBP employees as well as contributions from the business community.

The NBP employees have been making efforts to motivate their clients and business community to contribute generously to the relief fund, press release added.

The bank employees have also contributed Rsl million in cash and relief goods worth Rs1 million to alleviate sufferings of the quake victims.

BRADFORD VARSITY TEAM: A two-member team of the Bradford University handed over a cheque for Rs0.2 million to the Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao towards the President’s Relief Fund on Wednesday.

Rafat Farid, president and Asad Ali vice-president Pakistani Society in Bradford University respectively said that Pakistani community was highly mobilised to generate funds and donate goods to the earthquake victims and in this regard a campaign was launched in the university.

He expressed that the society of the Bradford University is planning to generate more funds and relief goods to send in the Kashmir and frontier province.

Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Abdul Rauf, Mian Akram Farid were also present on the occasion.
