Psychiatric service for Fata urged

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, Nov 2: NWFP Governor Khalilur Rehman has expressed concern over non-existence of psychiatric services in the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas and asked doctors to provide the facility to patients by organizing free medical camps there.

Talking to a five-member delegation of the Health Promotion Welfare Society (HPWS) which called on him at the Governor’s House on Wednesday, he urged the doctors’ community to serve their brethren in tribal areas and earn the blessings of Allah.

The delegation, headed by its chairman Dr Mian Iftikhar Hussain, apprised the governor of the society’s objectives that works in the private sector as a consultancy and healthcare organisation in the field of psychiatry.

Dr Hussain expressed the desire to hold free camps in Fata to provide treatment facilities to patients afflicted with psychiatric disorders.

He said that the society would not only provide free consultation to patients, but would also provide medicines free of charge. He said that due to lack of education in Fata, psychiatric patients there outnumbered those of the settled areas.

Dr Iftikhar said that the number of women patients might be higher than men in Fata, because women often refused to be seen by male doctors due to their male-dominated society.

The governor appreciated the initiative of providing free medical facilities to the Fata people afflicted by psychiatric complications for which no proper arrangements existed in the available medical institutions.

The governor said that it was the prime responsibility of doctors and health professionals to provide healthcare facilities to the people. For this purpose, he said the government would do its utmost to provide the necessary support.

The governor assured the delegation that it would be facilitated in all respects so that its programme met with success. He suggested that such camps should initially be set up in remote tribal agencies like Kurram, Orakzai and both Waziristans, saying that people in far-flung areas had less access to health facilities.

He directed the authorities concerned to provide space in the relevant hospital for the facility and extend due cooperation to the society for setting up its camps.

Secretary Fata Shahzad Mohammad Arbab and secretary to governor Arbab Mohammad Arif were also present on the occasion.
