Calamity-hit status for five NWFP districts

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Nov 1: The NWFP government has notified five northeastern districts of the province as calamity-stricken and geared up relief and rescue operation to evacuate the people marooned in remote villages.

Talking to journalists here, Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani said the concerned district coordinating officers had been asked to extend all out assistance to the affected.

The five districts are Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kohistan, Shangla and Battagram.

Mr Durrani explained he could not sign the summary because he was out of Peshawar for many days owing to his engagements in quake-hit areas. He regretted that the opposition lawmakers had staged a walkout from the provincial assembly on Monday on this issue.

“Everybody knows they are calamity-hit areas, but we will not exploit the situation for political purpose. It is our collective duty to work hard for the rehabilitation of the affected people,” he said.
