RAWALPINDI, Nov 1: England’s opening warm-up match before this month’s first Test was proving to be a nightmare as the PCB Patron’s XI had them against the wall on Tuesday, the second day of their three-day match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
After a woeful batting collapse on Monday that had seen them being cut down to 61 for six at one stage, Michael Vaughan’s side fared no better in the second innings and were precariously placed 39 for six by stumps.
Local lad Yasir Arafat underlined his potential yet again following up his first innings four-wicket haul with another two scalps in his second over while Mohammad Irshad effectively wrecked the tourists’ preparations with 3-22.
With an overall lead of only 84 runs and a full day’s play remaining, the Englishmen will be looking to their first innings saviour Marcus Trescothick again to save the match.
But for England who bowled out the Patron’s XI for 211 late in the day, the rival attack was looking ominous. Rawalpindi left-arm fast bowler Najaf Shah drew first blood picking up the wicket of Andrew Strauss for the second time in two days, Bazid Khan doing the needful in the slips.
The dismissal marked the start of the English “horror-board” in which Vaughan went for a duck, trapped leg before by Irshad and Matt Prior also falling to the same bowler.
Prior whose 117-run ninth wicket stand with Trescothick was the highlight of the first innings, dispatched what was a short delivery to Arafat at the square-leg boundary after scoring 16, to be the top English scorer.
Arafat followed up to shatter the defences of Kevin Pietersen and wicket-keeper Geraint Jones, both of them clean bowled as the local all-rounder finished with six victims so far, all of them bowled.
When play ended for the day, Paul Collingwood was at the crease on one and with him was Ian Bell, who had yet to get off the mark.
Earlier England declared their first innings at the overnight score of 256 for nine and then their bowlers quickly reduced the Patron’s XI to 103 for six by lunch.
Lancashire pacer James Anderson, aiming for a Test slot in place of the injured Simon Jones, snapped up the wickets of Ashar Zaidi, Yasir Hameed and Bazid Khan.
Ashar was taken by Vaughan in the covers while Bazid drove at an outswinger that gave Jones a catch behind the stumps.
Captain Misbahul Haq flashed at a wide one from Liam Plunkett to fall for nine, wicket-keeper Jones showing his agility again while shortly afterwards Yasir Hameed also swung at a wide ball that ended his 28-run innings.
Asim Kamal’s poor run with the bat continued as he was trapped in front by Collingwood. Then off-spinner Shaun Udal came on to claim the scalps of top run-getter Shahzad Malik (37), Khalid Latif and Yasir Arafat.
But a 61-run last-wicket stand between Zulqarnain who scored 34 not out and Tahir Khan (32) briefly frustrated England before Plunkett ended the partnership and the innings having Tahir caught by Jones.
