Lashkar denies involvement in Delhi bombings

SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Lashkar-e-Taiba denied on Tuesday any involvement in the weekend bombings in New Delhi saying it does not target civilians. A spokesman for Lashkar-i-Taiba told local media in a telephone conversation that allegations of involvement were “baseless and false”.

“We do not believe in killing innocent people especially women and children. Our religion does not allow to kill innocents. There is no way we can be linked to these bombings,” the Kashmir News Service quoted the spokesman as saying in a statement.

A rebel outfit, called the Islamic Revolutionary Group, claimed the responsibility for the blasts that killed 62 people, saying attacks would continue as long as Indian troops remain in the held-Kashmir.

Indian police say the group has links to Lashkar-i-Taiba which has been involved in a number of deadly attacks including in occupied-Kashmir.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hinted on Monday at the possibility of Pakistani involvement in the blasts at two markets that came days ahead of a major Hindu festival.

Pakistan rejected Mr Singh’s comments and called on him to produce evidence.—AFP
