KARACHI: FCS still without head after lapse of one year

KARACHI, Nov 1: The Fishermen Cooperative Society is still without a chairman and its affairs are being looked after by a three-member managing committee set up by the government last year.
The Sindh government could not take a decision about the future leadership of the FCS because of differences between two major coalition partners on the nomination of government directors in the 15-member Board of Directors of the Society.
No board meeting had been held since Aug 4 despite the fact that election of seven directors representing fishermen communities had been held, but the coalition partners of the government could not arrive on a consensus regarding rest of the eight nominated directors.
Though the board meeting had been summoned thrice during this period, but all were postponed abruptly without assigning any reason.
Sources said it was feared that in absence of any consensus, differences among the nominated directors could have caused embarrassment to the government as it could not afford discord within the coalition partners. They pointed out that it might perhaps be reason why the government had failed in taking a decision despite lapse of more than a year.
Meanwhile, the government had appointed a three-member managing committee headed to look after the day-to-day management of the FCS.
Undoubtedly, the committee had been able in controlling day-to-day administrative affairs. But it could not take any major decision because of its limited mandate.
Fishermen communities are worried over the inordinate delay in the election of an FCS chairman. They argued after the LB polls, there was no justification for not holding such an important body.
