More planes with relief goods arrive

ISLAMABAD, Oct 31: More planes with relief goods and relief teams from various countries arrived at Chaklala airbase on Monday. The eighth UAE Red Crescent Society plane with 20 tons of blankets, tents, warm clothes, medicine and children’s gift arrived at Chaklala air base on Monday.

The UAE RCS team has been engaged in distribution of relief goods in Muzaffarabad, Neelum valley, Patika, Bagh, Jila, Rawlakot and other affected areas, says a statement of the UAE embassy.

The RCS has also delivered relief goods to Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation for distribution among the affected people.

UKRAINE: The President and the Ukrainian government decided to provide adequate support to earthquake victims, said a press release of the Ukrainian embassy here Monday.

Ukraine offered to Pakistan the most needed relief supplies - tents, blankets, food etc - as well as qualified 80 members’ medical team.

The volume of Ukrainian aid is the biggest of the assistance ever rendered by Ukraine to any foreign country. As of Oct 28 the full amount of the aid delivered to Pakistan exceeds $3 million. Moreover, $120,000 were donated by the Ukrainian prominent businessman.

Among the directly donated relief aid Ukraine deployed its mobile tent hospital in Besham on Oct 18. The hospital is providing medical treatment to the injured people. As of early morning of Oct 31.

Above 320 persons were hospitalised, 94 were operated. Three women gave birth to children.

The elite medical staff of this modern and self-sustainable Ukrainian hospital, which equipped with two operations rooms, X- ray and medical laboratories, is continuously providing the quality treatment to ill or injured persons from Besham and nearby mountainous areas.

Two Ukrainian aircraft, including the biggest plane in the world AN-225 Mriya, landed in Pakistan with consignments of tents, more than 40,000 pieces of wool blankets, medicines, baby food and tinned products etc is about 250 tons.

FRENCH RELIEF: French teams specialized in search and rescue operations arrived in Islamabad on Oct 9, less than 36 hours after the earthquake, and next day were operational in Balakot.

In night between October 10-11, 60 doctors specialized in dealing with emergencies: surgeons, anaesthetists, and nursing staff arrived in Islamabad with necessary equipment and mobile facilities to install a field hospital.

An emergency and a surgical unit was set up in Muzaffarabad and started functioning on Oct 13. By Oct 30, these teams have carried out 2,257 medical examinations as well as 155 surgical operations.

The first cargo plane carrying 73 tons of aid (tents, generators, sleeping bags, blankets) supplied by French government, various NGOs and private foundations arrived Islamabad airport on Oct 14.

TELENOR: Telenor has announced an emergency relief package for the victims of the quake. Telenor is pledging a sum of Rs65 million to go to the Red Cross and President’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

LABOUR PARTY: Labour Party Pakistan starts building 100 shelter homes for the earthquake affected in area of Paniola, district Rawalakot for the earthquake victims.

Local committees working under the guidance of Citizen Relief Committee Kashmir had done the survey of the area to find out the neediest ones. The priority has been given to women and the most impoverished whose houses been totally demolished.

Some initial work on 25 houses has started in the village Nakar, with the full participation of the local community. This is nearly Rs7 million ($116,000) project. The financial assistance for this project has been provided by ActionAid Pakistan. The LPP chairperson Nisar Shah is heading a team of volunteers to carry out this project. The houses will be ready till the end of November.

There are several other international organizations and individuals that have contributed to the Labour Relief Campaign. They have sent the financial support or indicated that they are in process of collecting funds.

They include: Olof Palme International Centre, Stockholm, Graphic Union of Sweden, Industrial Union of Sweden, Socialist Party Sweden, LCR France and sections associated with United Secretariat of Fourth International (USFI), Solidarity Without Borders, Sweden, France, Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), Scotland, Democratic Socialist Perspective DSP (Australia), Tariq Ali, Solidarity, USA, Socialist Worker, USA, Swedish trade union paper; Dagens Arbete, Swedish Teacher Union Goteburg, Food Union Sweden, Several individuals from France, Canada, USA and Australia etc.
