Jail officials operation ends

By Mohammad Asghar

RAWALPINDI, Oct 31: Jail officials team on Monday concluded its three-day search operation in Adiala jail, but failed to find any narcotics from inside, apparently due to “hide and seek” being played between the jail guards and the drug suppliers and its users, a source said.

The inspection team headed by DIG jail, Rawalpindi Range, Mian Salik Jilal, completed its search operation and left for their destinations. Except for cash and an unattended mobile phone the inspection team was unable to find any narcotics from the jail during search operation.

The inquiry report comprising lists of the jail officials posted at the jail for a long time— detail of the cash recovered from prisoners and guards — one unattended mobile phone seized by the team during search and statements of some of the prisoners and security guards, would be submitted to the Inspector General of Prison Punjab within next couple of days, the sources said.

When a senior jail official who had been at Adiala jail in the past was contacted and asked, why the inspection team has failed to find any narcotics from prisoners or its suppliers, he said that it was due to “hide and seek” being played between the drug users and jail staff.

The latest example of “hide and seek” inside the jail was seen during the search operation on Sunday when some of the prisoners handed their cash over to police guards to save the cash from inspection team.

But the inspection team succeeded in seizing the cash also from the guards.

The source said there was nearly 5000 prisoners in Adiala jail at the moment and out of it, around 1000 are those involved in drug related cases. Despite such huge number of prisoners involved in the drug related cases, the inspection team could not find any significant quantity of narcotics.

The jail was sealed on Friday night in the wake of the chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s 15-days deadline to carry out reforms.

The CJ had also directed the IG Prisons Punjab to submit a complete report on the jail officials posted at the jail since long.
