KARACHI, Oct 31: A young man died and about five others were wounded in different incidents of firing in Saddar Town on Monday. Police registered two FIRs and arrested 10 suspects for their alleged involvement in the shooting and attempts to create a law and order situation.
The incidents of firing came in the aftermath of the Sunday’s killing of an activist of Sunni Tehrik at a place on M. A. Jinnah Road.
Police said that unknown persons riding a motorcycle opened fire at shopkeepers in the Light House area, wounding three shopkeepers and a customer. The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
Shortly afterwards, unknown persons on motorcycles opened fire in the Bohra Pir area killing one, Danish, 18, and wounding a shopkeeper. In both the incidents, the attackers managed to flee under the cover of firing.
Following the incidents, a large number of shopkeepers converged on the Light House section of M. A. Jinnah Road and blocked the main thoroughfare at in protest against the shooting. They staged a sit-in which lasted about an hour and caused severe traffic jam on the vital artery.
The situation was tackled by TPO Saddar Dr Sanaullah Abbasi who calmed down the protesters and persuaded to clear the road. An FIR against the unknown attackers was lodged at the Risala police station.
However, protesting youths forced shopkeepers in most of the markets in the area to keep their shops closed. Shops in Jubilee Market, Ranchore Line, Chuna Bhatti, Jama Cloth, Light House, Timber Market and other adjoining shopping areas remained closed.
Mohammad Nadeem Qadri, Convener of the Sunni Tehrik, Ranchore Line Sector, who was killed on Sunday, was buried in Mewashah Graveyard on Monday. His Namaz-i-Janaza was earlier offered in Siddiqui Masjid, Chuna Bhatti Chowk, an ST statement said.
Meanwhile, Iftikhar Ahmed Bhatti, a central ST leader has demanded immediate arrest of Nadeem Qadri’s killers. He deplored that eight activists of the Tehrik had been killed in the city during the holy month of Ramazan.
Nadeem Qadri, 28, alias Nadeem Mota was shot dead by two unknown attackers on a bike when he came out of the Alam Shah Bukhari Mazar, opposite Jama Cloth Market. Police said the assailants had used a Kalashnikov to kill him.
ROBBERY: Two brothers were killed and another one was injured in an armed robbery in Mohammadi Colony on Monday.
Police said that four armed men came to Sabir Bakery, in the limits of Docks police station, at Sehri time and held the three brothers hostage at gunpoint. As the robbers started collecting cash and other things from the bakery, the hostages raised hue and cry for help. Their relatives present in the nearby house rushed to their rescue leading to a scuffle between them and the robbers.
The robbers opened fire killing two of the brothers, Sabir and Arif, who died on the spot. The third brother, Nasir, sustained wounds and was rushed to the Civil Hospital in a critical condition.
The incident created panic in the locality and people came out of their houses.
