KARACHI: Protesters accuse police of sheltering kidnappers

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 31: Speakers at a protest demonstration on Monday demanded that three minor girls of the minority community, who had been kidnapped while going to school, be recovered immediately and stern action be taken against the kidnappers.

The demonstration organized by Action Committee for Safety of Minority Community Women was staged at the Karachi Press Club.

All Pakistan Minorities Alliance Sindh chief Micheal Javed, PPP Karachi Minority Wing chief Anwer Laldin, Ashok Jethmalani of PPP Minority Wing, Vijay Das, Kirshin Patel, Shahzadi Micheal, Kauser Javed and others also spoke.

They said that the three girls of a family were kidnapped while they were going to school in Punjab Colony on Oct 18. They feared that if the girls were not recovered immediately the kidnappers would force the girls to change their religion.

They alleged that the area police were protecting the kidnappers and the family of the kidnapped girls was being threatened and asked to keep quiet. They said that the police were earlier reluctant to register even the FIR. Now the FIR has been registered but the police were not taking any action against the kidnappers. They claimed that approximately 20 Hindu girls had been kidnapped in the past couple of months in the vicinity of Gizri alone.

The speakers maintained that the parents of the kidnapped girls had kept quiet owing to the threats to their life.

They also criticized the alleged role of police and government in giving shelter to the kidnappers.

They said that sense of insecurity was spreading among the minority communities who felt that their life and honour was not safe in the country. They also regretted that the state apparatus, the police, was not taking any action against the culprits.

They said that the constitution gave equal status to all citizens and the father of the nation Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had also said that all citizens were equal in the eyes of law, but protection was not being provided to the minorities in the country.

The protesters, carrying banners with their demands written on them, also chanted slogans for the immediate recovery of the kidnapped girls and demanded action against the kidnappers and the police.
