KARACHI: ‘Pakistan, India should coordinate relief work’
KARACHI, Oct 30: The Pakistan India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy and its youth forum have appealed to Islamabad and New Delhi to carry out coordinated relief activities in the areas struck by the massive earthquake.
The two forums noted that the earthquake had left thousands of people dead and rendered several million others homeless in Pakistan alone.
They appreciated the sincerity shown by the two governments in helping out the victims, and said that concrete measures were urgently required to enable people to come out with more support to the relief and rehabilitation efforts.
HOUSING SCHEME: Former federal minister for housing and chief patron of the Al-Mustafa Welfare Society Haji Mohammed Hanif Tayyab has proposed that the housing ministry should hold an emergency meeting to consider a housing project and determine models of the shelters for the people rendered homeless in the massive earthquake.
Talking to APP on his return on Saturday from Islamabad, where the society has set up a tent village for quake victims, he said that various organizations had been calling for the construction of low-cost houses on an emergency basis.
He also stressed that people should be kept informed of the collection and provision of tents in order to allay fear and dispel rumours of misappropriation and negligence.
Mr Tayyab said that the government should also inform the nation through media about the remote and inaccessible areas where relief work was needed to be carried out immediately.
MMA: MMA leader and Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Sindh Dr Mumtaz Memon on Saturday accused the government of showing disrespect to the parliament by not taking it into confidence on Nato forces’ participation in relief operations.
He warned that the nation would not allow Nato to play with the country’s integrity and Kashmir cause in the garb of the relief operation.
Dr Memon stressed that parliament and political forces must be taken into confidence for to deal with the situation more effectively.—APP/PPI
