Man acquitted in counterfeit currency case

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Oct 28: Additional district and sessions judge Mohammad Jamal Khan on Friday acquitted a man from Punjab in a case of possession of counterfeit notes.

The court ruled that the prosecution could not prove its case against the accused, Mohammad Aamir. He was arrested by the West Cantonment police on January 15 from a passenger bus. The police claimed to have found 55 fake currency notes of Rs1,000 denomination in his possession.

Advocate Hafiz Nawab Ali appeared for the accused and argued that he was not aware that the currency notes were fake ones. He had come here from Punjab for the recovery of a loan he had extended to a person, added Mr Ali.

He contended that even it was not sure whether the notes recovered from the accused were fake or genuine, as police had not sealed them during the arrest.

He said that either the accused had been given fake notes by the person indebted to him or the police had changed the genuine currency notes.
