KARACHI, Oct 28: The City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has said that designing and planning of the Gharibabad Underpass, Hassan Square Flyover and the M.A. Jinnah Road (Extension) had been carried out in haste without meeting requirements of traffic improvement.

He said that without removing planning and designing lacunas, the implementation of these projects would only add to traffic problems and, therefore, immediate steps were needed in this regard by engineers and consultants.

He issued directives in this regard during a visit to various roads and traffic improvement projects in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town on late Thursday night during which he had on-the-site briefings.

DCO Karachi Fazalur Rehman, EDO Works, concerned officials, engineers and consultants were also present there.

The city nazim said it should be ensured that the said projects were completed in the specific time period despite their redesigning.

He observed that while designing these projects, it seemed that the consultants were in a hurry, and had these been completed without removing the defects, it would only have amounted to wastage of public money.

He cautioned that if any carelessness or negligence came to the fore in the matter, action would be taken against concerned officials, engineers or consultants.

Mr Kamal said he would review the construction of other roads and development schemes as well to see which of them were being carried out with unrealistic planning.

He said remedial measures would be taken if any other project was identified to be implemented while ignoring traffic requirements.

He said money should be spent on development projects with prudence and after fulfilling legal requirements.—APP
