ISLAMABAD, Oct 27: A mobile headquarters of the Nato force sent to assist the relief work became ‘fully operational’ on Thursday. Vice Admiral John Stufflebeem, commander of the mission, said on the occasion that the Deployed Joint Task Force (DJTF) of Nato “is solely focused on supporting Pakistani authorities and those bringing relief supplies and aid capabilities to the affected regions”.
The DJTF team is coordinating Nato relief activities with the Pakistani authorities to direct urgently needed capabilities to areas “where they can do the most good,” a DJTF announcement said.
All offers from Nato and partner nations are being coordinated by the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre which is working in conjunction with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the European Union, and the embassy of Pakistan in Brussels.
Daily Boeing 747 flights airlifting relief supplies from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) warehouse in southern Turkey are complementing Nato’s own C-130 flights that started on Oct 19.
“This is a short-term relief mission,” said the DJTF commander.
