Qualifiers stun favourites

BASEL (Switzerland), Oct 27: Qualifiers rose up to swat down a pair of seeds Thursday, with number one Guillermo Coria and number eight Tommy Haas becoming upset victims in the second round of the 829,000-euro Swiss Indoors.

Belgian Kristof Vliegen left Argentine Coria in serious crisis, with his qualification dreams for next month’s eight-man Masters Cup now hinging on a desperate fightback next week in Paris.

Vliegen, ranked 131, stunned the South American 7-6 (7/0), 7-5, with Coria salvaging two match points before going down.

Markos Baghdatis of Cyprus, another qualifier still in contention, followed up on this month’s last-eight appearance in Tokyo with a knockout of Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-3 as the German failed to advanced this injury-plagued season.

The 20-year-old Baghdatis, ranked 85th, won his ninth match of the season against 11 defeats as he humbled Haas, whose rolled ankle at Wimbledon has coloured the second half of his season.

Argentine Jose Acasuso overcame Spain’s third seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-3.

Dominik Hrbaty stood as the lone seed to succeed, defeating Agustin Calleri 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Coria admits he’s facing a crisis as the last week of regular ATP play begins Monday at the Paris Masters.
