Defiant knocks by Faisal, Misbah for Rest of Pakistan
By Our Sports Correspondent
LAHORE, Oct 27: Gutsy batting by Faisal Iqbal and skipper Misbahul Haq lifted the gloom in the Rest of Pakistan’s camp after Pakistan XI had piled a first-innings total of 474 on the second day of the four-day trial match at the Qadhafi Stadium on Thursday.
Faisal, nephew of great Javed Miandad, nudged the national selectors with an unbeaten 85 and with skipper Misbah, who was batting with 53, steadied the innings after the Rest of Pakistan were in tatters at 47 for three. The fourth-wicket pair has so far put on 146 in 161 minutes.
Faisal, who scored a century in the Karachi trial fixture last week, faced 114 balls and struck 14 boundaries while Misbah’s patient 127-ball knock includes six fours.
Both came together after openers Taufiq Umar and Imran Farhat had failed to provide a solid start with the latter falling to paceman Mohammad Sami for a duck.
Bazid Khan (15) was injured when a rising delivery from Sami hit him on the helmet and forced the right-hander to retire hurt. However, he did not suffer any big injury and was likely to resume his innings on Friday.
Taufiq, after making 21, offered an easy catch to Asim Kamal at silly-point off leg-spinner Shahid Afridi.
The in-form Hasan Raza disappointed his supporters when he unnecessarily tried to sweep Afridi in the same over and was adjudged LBW for two.
Test all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who has been suffering with an elbow injury, bowled only four deliveries before tossing the ball to captain Inzamamul Haq, who asked his deputy Younis Khan to complete the over.
Earlier, Pakistan XI declared their innings at the lunch interval after adding 122 to the overnight score of 352 for two.
Leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, after an enduring a luckless first day, redeemed himself with four of the five wickets to fall. The veteran leg-spinner finished with four for 173 in 32 overs.
Shoaib Malik opted to retire at his overnight score of 177, but Mohammad Yousuf added another 56 to his Wednesday’s tally of 42.
Inzamam, who had failed to perform in the Afro-Asia Cup in South Africa and the ICC Super Series in Australia recently, and was badly in need of a big innings before the England series, scored just 14 before being brilliant held by Faisal off Mushtaq.
Mushtaq also got rid of Asim Kamal for five while Abdul Razzaq fell to off-spinner Arshad Khan. Afridi became Mushtaq’s third victim before Yousuf found a reliable ally in Kamran Akmal.
But it was Mushtaq who had the last laugh when Yousuf was adjudged LBW two short of his century. Yousuf hit 11 boundaries and three sixes during his 110-ball innings.
