First phase of livestock census in 21 districts

By Zaheer Mahmood Siddiqui

LAHORE, Oct 27: The first phase field operation (enumeration) of the Livestock Census 2006 in 21 districts of the country is likely to be completed by Oct 30, it is learnt.

Preparation for the second phase would start after Eid for enumeration in 39 districts of the country, officials told Dawn on Thursday.

The field operation in all parts of the country will be completed by the end of July 2006 by the Agriculture Census Organization (ACO) of the Statistics Division of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs.

Lahore, Gujranwala, Narowal, Sialkot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Layyah, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Bhakkar districts in the Punjab where enumeration work in the second phase would be carried out.

Karachi, Hyderabad, Ghotki, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Shahdadkot, Larkana, Dadu, Jamshoro, Tando Mohammad Khan and Matiari would be the Sindh districts where the field operation would conclude in the last week of January next year.

Giving details, ACO officials said the second phase would begin from Nov 14 with preparatory meetings with the executing agencies staff — the district employees of the provincial livestock and dairy development departments.

Training of enumerators and supervisors from Dec 8 to 14 would follow the meetings while the enumeration in mouzas of 26 Punjab and talukas of 13 Sindh districts would start from Dec 11.

All the staff deputed for the census has been trained by the master trainers of the ACO, officials said.

Primarily, the census covers the head count of commercially important livestock — cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats — by sex, breed and age groups besides the head count of horses, mules, donkeys and camels by sex and age groups.

Two separate surveys on milk production, especially in the far flung rural areas of Sindh and Punjab, and the number of animals slaughtered would be conducted simultaneously with the census, officials said.

The production capacity of milk and its position of increasing demand would be assessed for making valuable planning for the dairy development in the country.

Work on the fourth livestock census began on Sept 1 with the two-month first phase enumeration in selected mouzas of 11 Punjab and talukas of 10 Sindh districts.

The Punjab districts were Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Cholistan, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Vehari, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Kasur and Okara while the Sindh districts were Khairpur, Naushero Feroze, Nawabshah, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allah Yar, Thatta, Sanghar, Umerkot, Tharparkar and Badin.

Established in 1957, the ACO conducts mouza census after every five years, the agriculture census in the year ending on the digit 0, the agricultural machinery census in the year ending on 4 and the livestock in the year ending on 6.
