SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 27: A federal judge granted bail on Wednesday to a Pakistani-born Californian charged with lying to investigators about his son’s travels to Pakistan, where prosecutors allege he trained in terrorist camps.
US District Judge Garland Burrell Jr said Umer Hayat, 47, would be released if he posted a $1.5 million bond. Hayat also must remain at his Lodi, California, home under electronic monitoring and permit his telephones to be tapped.
“When a bond of $1.5 million in home equity is considered in combination with other conditions of release, these conditions appear to reasonably assure the appearance of Umer at trial,” the judge wrote.
Hayat’s son, Hamid Hayat, has been indicted on a charge of supporting terrorists. The father has been charged with making a false statement to investigators about his son’s activities.—Reuters
