KARACHI: Girl dies as students run over by bus

KARACHI, Oct 25: Agitating youths torched a bus at NIPA intersection on Tuesday morning following the death of a girl student in a road accident on Monday.

Madiha Samee and two other students of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Jehan Zeb and Farhan, were standing on the pavement to cross the main University Road when they were run over by a recklessly driven bus of route 4-M, bearing number JA-2009. The injured were shifted to local hospitals.

Madiha died during treatment. Farhan is still admitted to Aga Khan Hospital while Jehan Zeb was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

Police said the students were crossing the main road near NIPA traffic intersection on Monday afternoon when they were hit by the bus.

Madiha Samee, Farhan and Jehan Zeb suffered critical injuries and were rushed to Aga Khan and Liaquat National hospitals in the university ambulance. However, Madiha Samee succumbed to her wounds a few hours later.

SHO Aziz Bhatti said that the police have impounded the bus following the accident, but the driver managed to escape.

On Tuesday, in reaction to the Monday’s accident, agitated students set a bus on fire of the same route near NIPA.

SHO Nisar Qaimkhani said they have detained around nine students for creating law and order situation and setting the bus on fire.

On Tuesday morning, Vice Chancellor Dr Prof Nazir Ahmed, Dean Faculty of Engineering Dr Najeeb Siddiqui and Dean Applied and Basic Sciences Javed Rizvi teaching and non-teaching staff prayed for the departed soul. It was announced that University will bear all expenses for treatment of the injured students.

Later, the faculty and other staff members went to the residence of Madiha and offered condolences with the family members, says a press release issued by the University.

Soyam of the deceased will be held at A-82 Block 14, Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Wednesday.

ACCIDENT: A young man died in a hit and run accident in the limits of Zaman Town police station on Tuesday.

Rashid, 32, was on a motorcycle when a vehicle hit him. The victim was rushed to JPMC where he died during treatment.

DIES: A man who was trying to resolve a dispute between a security guard and a young man died when the guard’s weapon went off during scuffle at the Christian Cemetery on Tuesday.

Police said the security guard of the cemetery Dil Bux objected to the presence of a young couple who were reportedly sitting in the graveyard.

As the guard and the young man engaged in a scuffle, people from the nearby Bazzatta Lane tried to disengage the two. However, during the scuffle Maqsood Alam, 27, sustained a bullet wound and he died at the JPMC.

SUICIDE: A young man committed suicide in North Karachi on Wednesday.

Police said Mohammad Naeem, 19, reportedly shot himself in the head in his house in New Karachi. Police said Naeem used his father’s pistol. Quoting the family, police said Naeem was mentally disturbed after seeing earthquake reports on TV channels.
