BNP-M apprehends massive operation against Mengal

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, October 24: Secretary general of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) Habib Jalib Baloch has alleged that the government is preparing to launch an operation in Wadh against Sardar Ataullah Mengal and his people.

Speaking at a press conference here on Monday Mr Jalib, Senator Sanaullah Baloch and MPA Mohammad Akbar Mengal claimed that a decision about launching the operation had been taken at a high-level meeting held in the Governor House on Monday. Besides the governor, they said, the chief minister and senior officials also attended the meeting.

“The operation in the first stage would be launched on the residence of Sardar Mengal and his son Akhtar Mengal in Wadh,” Mr Jalib said, adding that high security alert had been declared and additional troops were being sent to the area.

He said that the recent attack on the residence of Sardar Mengal was well planed and the bedroom of Sardar Mengal had been targeted. “Secret agencies are creating a situation to justify the launching of a military operation in Wadh and Khuzdar,” he said. Through the operation, he added, the government wanted to expand the existing army cantonment in Khuzdar.

However, he warned that any such action would be resisted. He said that a meeting of the Pakistan Oppressed Nations (PONM) would be held on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the situation. He said that despite government’s intentions and plans, Sardar Ataullah Mengal was keeping calm and playing his role in maintaining peace.

The BNP leader also said that despite the fact that police had registered FIR about rocket attacks, no body had been arrested. He said that people of the area had caught some elements red-handed and handed them over to police but no action was being taken against them. He said that there was no mention of the rocket attack on the residence of Sardar Mengal in the FIR.

He alleged that the district police officer had admitted that the authorities had asked them not to register an FIR against the accused.

MPA’S VISIT: A fact-finding committee of the Balochistan Assembly formed on Monday to investigate into the attack on the home of Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement chief Sardar Attaullah Mengal will visit Wadh on Tuesday.

Provincial Senior Minister Maulana Abdul Wasay is the committee’s chairman and leader of the opposition Kachkol Ali, Abdur Rahim Ziaratwal, Shafiq Ahmed Khan and provincial Ministers Hafiz Hamdullah, Maulana Faiz Mohammad and Mir Mohammad Asim Kurd are its members.

The committee will meet Sardar Akhtar Mengal and Mir Shafiqur Rehman Mengal and observe the situation in Wadh.

It will submit its report in the assembly on Oct 27. The committee was formed in a meeting held in the chamber of Balochistan Assembly Speaker Jamal Shah Kakar. Chief Minister Jam Mir Mohammad Yousuf, Maulana Wasay, Kachkol Ali and other MPAs attended the meeting.
