GUJRANWALA, Oct 24: Some politicians and institutions are behind the conspiracy hatched against the Edhi Welfare Trust to bring a bad name to it. This was stated by Abdul Sattar Edhi while talking to this correspondent by telephone here on Monday.
He termed the scandal of embezzlement of relief goods collected by Edhi Centre in Gujranwala a well-managed conspiracy against his organization.
Mr Edhi said that frantic efforts were made to shift a huge quantity of relief goods stored in the Gujranwala centre to earthquake affected areas, but the police did not allow us. He claimed that the police demanded court orders for the shifting of relief goods.
He said that new recruitments were made, but they were not ready to perform their duties in Gujranwala for fear of police.
He further alleged that the police were demanding bribe from the arrested workers for their release. He also condemned his former workers for selling relief goods in the market.
Meanwhile, the Edhi centre in Gujranwala has been closed for the last six days. Policemen have been deployed outside the centre while the Edhi ambulance service is not functional as well.
FLOUR BAGS: Around 50,000 more wheat bags of 20kg each will be provided to the people at Rs200 apiece under the Punjab Chief Minister’s Ramazan package during the last week of the holy month.
This was stated by district food controller Navid Ashraf at a meeting here on Monday.
He said that sale points were also increased to 48 from 41 in the district while 134,886 flour bags of 20kg each had so far been sold at these points. He expressed the hope that the target of selling 190,000 flour bags would be achieved during the current week.
Meanwhile, citizens held the district administration and traders responsible for higher rates and poor quality of commodities in Ramazan bazaars.
ELECTROCUTED: An electrician was electrocuted while rectifying a fan in Rahwali on Monday.
Muhammad Afzal received a severe shock and died while being taken to hospital.
DEATH GRANTED: A local court on Monday handed down death sentence, along with Rs100,000 fine, to a woman for killing a minor son of her husband’s first wife.
According to the prosecution, convict Rasulan Bibi Kidnapped the boy, Arsalan, from his house, and threw him into a canal in Sader area. The boy’s body was later recovered by divers from the canal.
