Sindh MPA’s husband shot dead on highway

By M. H. Khan

HYDERABAD, Oct 23: The husband of Asma Sherani, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s MPA from Karachi, was shot dead by officials of the Anti-Car Lifting Cell, on the Super Highway early on Sunday morning.

Two labourers were injured in the incident and were admitted to the Hyderabad Civil Hospital.

The deceased, Abdul Aziz, was in his early 30s and lived in Hyderabad.

His Nikkah with Asma Sherani was solmnized some time back and their Rukhsati was planned after Eid.

He was returning to Hyderabad with his friend Furqan, after leaving his two sisters-in-law and two nieces in Karachi.

Family members said that the car they were riding belonged to Mr Furqan who was driving it.

They said that Mr Furqan did not stop the car when the Karachi-based ACLC officials signalled it to do so.

The police personnel were in civvies and in a white private car. They chased Mr Furqan’s car and later fired at it.

It is learnt that the ACLC officials had sought the help of Motorway Police in the chase.

Mr Furqan later told MQM leaders here that he had seen at least four Motorway Police vans and a private white car chasing them when Aziz was hit by a bullet.

The body of Mr Aziz was handed over to the Lunikot police by the ACLC personnel. The body was later brought to the Hyderabad Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

Medico-legal officer Dr Abdul Samad said that Aziz had been hit by a bullet behind the ear in the temporal region.

The deceased was laid to rest in the Tando Yousuf graveyard.

His funeral was attended by Sindh Home Minister Abdul Rauf Siddiqi, MQM MPAs and activists, relatives and friends.

Raees, a brother of Mr Aziz, told Dawn that his brother lived in the Lalwani Gali, Shahi Bazaar, while Asma lived in North Karachi.

He said the ACLC officials had informed him that they had to resort to firing at Nooriabad and two people had suffered injuries and a pistol had been recovered.

Jamshoro DPO Attaullah Chandio told a TV channel that it was an encounter and police returned fire, resulting in the death of Mr Aziz.

Home Minister Rauf Siddiqi told newsmen that three Karachi ACLC policemen had been taken into custody for interrogation. The detained policemen included one inspector and two constables. The minister said that personnel of two Motorway vehicles, eagle-1 and eagle-2, would also be questioned.

He said that a committee, headed by Hyderabad DIG Police Operations Range would investigate the matter and submit its report within three days.
