Horse-racing: Gujrati Babu captures Cup
LAHORE, Oct 23: Three-year-old chestnut colt, Gujrati Babu ridden by Jockey M. Hanif won the Saif Group Cup run over 1600m during the 8th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Trained by Amjad Ali II, Gujrati Babu, a five to two shot beat chestnut English filly Free Fall, who fell freely short by about three lengths to concede victory. Fancied Calendar Girl, ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman ran hopelessly poor to finish third, another four lengths behind while Dixi Queen completed the frame among seven starters.
This was the sixth race of the day. A race earlier, two to one second favourite Storm Warning edged out fancied bay filly Baker Eye. Leading all the way home Storm Warning warded off a strong challenge from Baker Eye in the last few strides to win the race by a neck.
This seventh race of the day was contested over 1600m.
Key Guy Doll and Swing completed the board among seven runners. Fancied bay colt, Rough Tough proved his worth in the name when he simply ran ahead of the field in the fifth race and never at any stage of the race let other contestants to come near. He beat Manu Janu by four lengths.
Odds on favourite Chan Badshah, who was beaten in his outing last Sunday successfully made amends this time and won the fourth race, a class V div II to be gone over 1300m.
Well Minister, Stride To Moment and Take Off completed the board.
The most impressive of the Sunday winners was Haji Fazal Hadi trained bay filly, Royal Fish, who won the third race comfortably by about five lengths from odds on favourite May May.
Royal Fish was ridden smartly by the riding boy Azhar Hussain.
Four favourites obliged the punters in a card of seven races.
Trainer Amjad Ali II won the day’s racing honours when he sent out two winners. He first saddled Gujrati Babu in the feature event and then completed his double through saddling the bay colt Storm Warning in the seventh and last race.
