KARACHI: Turkish doctor sends in another relief plane

KARACHI, Oct 23: Dr Mehment Haberal, President of the Baskent University, Ankara, Turkey, a friend of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, has sent the second plane-load of essential medicines, medical equipment and relief goods for quake victims.
According to an SIUT statement issued here on Sunday, the relief goods included five dialysis machines, essential disposables, surgical equipment and medicines, food and clothes. With the arrival of the second shipment, the relief goods contributed by Dr Haberal totalled 11 tons.
The medical equipment and other supplies have further improved medical facilities at the two disaster relief units set up by the SIUT in Abbotabad and Muzaffarabad.
The units refer patients with multiple problems involving orthopaedic, gynaecological and surgical requirements, to the SIUT in Karachi. Seven such patients have already arrived at the institute from Balakot, Kewai and Muzaffarabad.
ICNA: The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), on request from the Al-Khidmat Welfare Society, has sent a team of doctors and surgeons to assist in the relief operations under way in the quake-hit areas of northern Pakistan.
The team, led by a Kenya-based doctor, Dr Basheer Malik, arrived here on Sunday to augment the medical operations being carried out in the field hospitals set up by the Jamaat-i-Islami in Bagh, Muzaffarabad, Abbotabad, Mansehra, etc., said a JI press release.
Meanwhile, Director of the Usman Public Group of Schools Naseem Siddiqui delivered a cheque of Rs0.5 million to former city nazim Niamatullah Khan, Relief Coordinator of the Al-Khidmat. The funds have been raised from donations given by students and teachers of the group’s nine campuses.
The Al-Khidmat Welfare Society on Sunday dispatched 10 more truckloads of relief goods from the JI office, Idara Noor-i-Haq, to Muzaffarabad, Mansehra and Abbotabad for earthquake victims.
This was the 12th consignment of relief goods, including tents, blankets, and edibles, sent by the society, a JI press release said.
So far, the society has sent 135 truckloads of relief goods to the quake-hit areas.
JAS: Jamaat Ahl-i-Sunnat, through its Khidmat-i-Khalq wing, on Sunday dispatched its fifth consignment of relief goods to quake affected areas of the NWFP and Azad Kashmir.
Speaking on the occasion, JAS Karachi chapter chief Allama Shah Turabul Haq Qadri said that the party had already sent relief goods worth millions of rupees to quake-hit areas.
The Anjuman Naujawanan-i-Islam has sent a container and five trucks loaded with relief goods from Jamshed and Lyari Towns to Balakote, Batgram, Buttal and Shingari areas which have badly been affected by the quake, according to a press release.
AL-MUSTAFA: The Al-Mustafa Welfare Society has made special treatment arrangements for the survivors of the earthquake at its medical centres in Karachi, adds PPI.
Besides, the organization has sent 1,000 tons of edibles, 18,000 blankets, 10,000 tents, 21,000 leather jackets, warm shawls, 26,400 shrouds, and medicines worth Rs2.5 million, along with six ambulances and 800 bottles of blood to the quake-ravaged areas.
The society’s contingent of some 180 volunteers with a team of 40 doctors and 30 paramedics are engaged in relief efforts, President of AMS Karachi Ahmed Shakoor said in a press release on Sunday.
He said that cooked meals for 3,500 people was being dispatched to northern areas for quake victims on a daily basis.
