PESHAWAR: Teachers reject deduction, threaten to boycott classes

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Oct 22: Peshawar University Teachers Association (Puta) has rejected 30 per cent deduction from the salaries of the evening shift teachers and has decided not to take second shift classes from Nov 1.

The Puta members in a meeting here at the campus decided to boycott evening classes and termed the 30 per cent deduction from their salaries unacceptable.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, the Puta urged its members not to accept deducted salaries for the months of September and October and urged them to stop taking second shift classes from Nov 1.

The university teachers complained that they were paid Rs275 per class for the second shift whereas the teachers in the University of Punjab were paid Rs500 per class.

They termed the 30 per cent deduction unreasonable and acceptable to them.

Sher Bahadur, the Peshawar University registrar, however said that university had not taken any formal decision to deduct the salaries of evening shift teachers. He said the proposal was floated in a general body meeting earlier this month but so far no deductions have been made.

The former governor, the chancellor of the Peshawar University, had abolished the self-finance scheme due to which the university was facing financial losses, Mr Bahadur said.

He said to offset these losses the evening shift was started in the university but as the fee was too less so last year the university again faced financial difficulties.

Mr Bahadur said the 30 per cent deduction was suggested at the general body meeting on Oct 11 to recover the university from financial problem and the deans of all the departments agreed to the proposal.

He said according to a university rule teachers teaching in the evening shift anywhere will have to take permission from the university and will pay 30 per cent of their income to the university.
