Protest walkout by opposition in Balochistan

By Our Correspondent

QUETTA, Oct 21: Opposition members in the Balochistan Assembly staged a walkout on Friday in protest against Speaker Jamal Shah Kakar’s decision to block a general debate on an attack on Ponam chief Sardar Ataullah Mengal’s home and the ruling coalition members’ reluctance to discuss PSDP allocations.

Mir Akbar Mengal of BNP-Mengal, who had tabled an adjournment motion that sought a general discussion on the Oct 18 incident at Sardar Mengal’s residence, accused intelligence agencies of having fired rockets on the house.

He said the attack was a desperate attempt to implicate Sardar Mengal in tribal feuds and prevent him from playing a political role for the cause of the Baloch people.

Opposition leader Kachkol Ali and Abdur Rahim Ziaratwal supported the motion but Senior Minister Abdul Wasay voiced reservations and said it would be better if the matter was allowed to cool down.

Deputy Speaker Mir Muhammad Aslam Bhootani condemned the attack on Sardar Mengal’s house and called upon the house to work out a policy that would help discourage attacks on homes of tribal chiefs and elders.

The speaker disposed of the motion and the opposition members staged the walkout.

Treasury members rejected another motion of the opposition concerning the “unjust distribution of PSDP allocations of funds to different districts”.

The speaker summoned the home minister and DIG police to his chamber on Oct 24 on a privilege motion tabled by Mr Ziaratwal complaining that the levies and police were lodging false FIRs against him and other MPAs of the PMAP.

The house passed the West Pakistan Family (Amendment) Balochistan bill 2005 tabled by Finance Minister Syed Ehsan Shah The assembly will meet again on Monday.
