Karachi encounter declared as a draw

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 19: In another bizarre proclamation by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the four-day trial fixture between Karachi and Pakistan XI was adjudged a draw at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

The end result was more puzzling since the second innings of the match was restricted to 52 overs per side. In that eventuality, Karachi should have been the clear-cut winners since Pakistan XI had finished on 198 for nine, when the stipulated overs exhausted, while chasing a target of 218.

Given the activities (such as use of substitutions etc) that took place during the course of this match, even Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, was unsure whether to classify this fixture as first-class or otherwise. But according to PCB’s Saqib Irfan, the match is to be recognized as first-class.

The Pakistan XI altered their batting-order with Younis Khan coming at No 5 and opener Imran Farhat demoted to No 7. And they were the only two batsmen to make significant contributions in the second innings.

Younis, the Pakistan XI skipper, matched his first-innings 75 with an identical knock while striking 10 fours and one six in another high-class batting performance. Imran made 44 to follow his 89 in the first innings.

Spinners Danish Kaneria and Tahir Khan captured three wickets each after pacers Mohammad Sami and Tanvir Ahmed had seen off openers Taufiq Umar and Shoaib Malik.

Earlier, Aminur Rahman made crucial 61 as the Karachiites recovered from the overnight 73 for five to 216 all out in the second knock. The wicket-keeper lashed nine fours and three sixes in his 79-ball innings.

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir, one of the substitutions, picked up four wickets but went for 99 runs in 17 overs.
