100 detained as curfew relaxed in Gilgit

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Oct 19: Law-enforcement agencies have detained around 100 people during a search for suspects and seized weapons in connection with the Oct 13 violent clashes here.

Sources said the search operation had been continuing for five days in various localities of the city.

An official source said the people arrested on suspicion would be freed after thorough investigation.

The sources said the forces were in search of 25 prime suspects who were reportedly involved in firing on security forces and instigating the weeklong violence in Gilgit.

They said eight Sunni and Shia religious scholars detained under the anti-terrorism act on Oct 15, had been shifted to Adiyala Jail on Wednesday from Jaglote.

CURFEW BREAK: Meanwhile, the authorities relaxed curfew from 9am to 1pm in the city.

A few people came out of their homes to buy necessary goods, but a majority preferred to stay inside owing to uneasy calm and panic.

Residents said hundreds of stranded people, who were unable to leave the city during the last curfew break, left the city on Wednesday.

Food and fuel crisis forced many families to leave for safe destinations.
