KHAIRPUR, Oct 19: The 184th annual urs of spiritual saint and sufi poet Sachal Sarmast began on Wednesday in Daraza Sharif. Sindh Health Minister Shabbir Ahmed Qaimkhani and Minister for Auqaf and Zakat Manzoor Ahmed Panhwar inaugurated the urs and laid floral wreaths on the poet’s shrine.
Sindh Auqaf Secretary Nadir Ali Markhani and District Nazim Niaz Hussain Shah were present on the occasion.
Later, Mehfil-i-Sama was held.
On the occasion, Mr Qaimkhani announced on behalf of the Sindh governor an amount of Rs500,000 for repair of the Sachal Sarmast’s shrine.
Sakhi Qabool Mohammad, Sajada-i-Nasheen of Dargah Sachal Sarmast, said that the mausoleum was in a dilapidated condition but the Auqaf department was doing nothing for it.
He said that on occasion of urs every year, government officials make announcements but no practical work was done.
He said that in 2003, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad had announced Rs1 million to provide different facilities at the shrine but only a floor, costing Rs500,000, had been constructed and that too with a substandard material.
He said that historical well which was dug by founder of the shrine Mian Hafiz Sahib Dino Farooqui and Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai at Daraza Sharif, had been destroyed.
Sajada-i-Nasheen demanded that the historical well be cleaned and restored for drinking water.
He said that there was a shortage of drinking water at the shrine and devotees did not get adequate water for ablution.
He said the Auqaf manager and other employees remain absent the whole year which had created chaos at the shrine.
The ministers gave away Sachal Award-2005 to Fakir Azizullah Maitlo (sufi singer), Ayaz Mallah (best singer), Mohan Lal Premi (best treatise), Dr Yousuf Khushik (paper on Malakhro), a posthumous award for Karim Bux Wustiro (folk wisdom), Mohammad Khan Phul (Malh [Sindhi wrestling]), Haji Zameer Memon (worker), Niaz Hussain (Sachal-jo-Pandhearo award) and M.D. Lala (Sachal Yadgar Committee).
Maula Bux Larik, secretary Sachal Yadgar committee presented Sachal souvenirs and books of Sachal Sarmast to the guests.
Sufi singers, including Nazeer Fakir, recited selected verses of Sachal Sarmast.
