HYDERABAD: Palejo says country in grip of extremism

HYDERABAD, Oct 19: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palejo has said that Jinnah’s enlightened and democratic country has been taken over by “General Shahi” and as a result the country is in grip of extremism, ethnicism and sectarianism.
He said that since the secession of East Pakistan, the entire system has been illegal and unconstitutional because no new social contract was signed.
He was speaking at the concluding session of a three-day workshop organized by the Sindhi Hari Tehrik (Peasants’ Movement) at Pabhan Sharif on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
Mr Palejo said Sindh had joined Jinnah’s Pakistan which envisaged sovereign and autonomous states in a federation.
He said it was on that basis that the Muslim League had won the elections.
He said that the country was handed over to “General Shahi” under a conspiracy, totally forgetting sacrifices of millions of people who had opted for Pakistan.
He criticized what he called inordinate delay in providing relief to unfortunate earthquake victims. He also lashed out at protagonists of the anti-Sindh Kalabagh and Bhasha dams.
Amir Ali, Abrar Qazi, Jami Chandio and Aftab Kaloi spoke on the occasion.
JSQM: Police have failed to arrest murderers of JSQM leader Gul Bhatti, son of senior journalist Parwano Bhatti.
Mr Bhatti was murdered on July 28 and his father had registered an FIR at the Qasimabad police station nominating Mazhar Memon and Jan Mohammad Junejo as accused.
The accused had absconded and police, according to Parwano Bhatti, have made no efforts to arrest them though their whereabouts are known to police.
The journalist said that he approached all the high-ups but justice had not been restored to him.
When contacted on telephone, the investigation officer said that the case had already been challaned in the relevant court in absence of the accused (section 512 CrPC).
He was unaware whether the accused had been declared as proclaimed offender under section 87 CrPC or any orders had been issued under section 88 CrPC for the attachment of their properties to compel them to appear before the court.
OMBUDSMAN: Sindh Ombudsman Yousuf Jamal has donated his entire discretionary grant to the President’s Relief Fund plus his 15 days salary.
The advisers and other officers of the ombudsman secretariat have also donated their two days salary and grade-I to 16 employees their one day salary to the relief fund.
Similarly, the directors of the ombudsman subordinates offices and staff have also donated two days and one day salary respectively to the President’s Relief Fund.
DONATION: The city and Qasimabad branches of St. Bonaventures High School Hyderabad have donated Rs400,000 to the President’s Relief Fund for earthquake victims.
