Fuel tanker explodes near border

JALALABAD, Oct 16: A tanker supplying fuel to a US base in Afghanistan was destroyed in an explosion on the border with Pakistan, police said on Sunday.

No one was hurt in Saturday’s blast at Torkham Pass, about 160km east of the capital Kabul, police commander Mustafa Khan told AFP.

An Afghan military commander said the blaze was caused by an explosion from a bomb but the provincial governor said it was sparked by a cooking fire.

On Friday, eight other fuel tankers from Pakistan were set ablaze near US and Afghan army bases outside the southern city of Kandahar, a hotbed for attacks linked to the Taliban regime.

There have been several similar attacks on trucks and tankers supplying US bases in the east and south of the country. They are usually blamed on Taliban-linked militants.—AFP
