Timofeyeva, Rugut lift titles

NEW DELHI, Oct 16: Kenyan Philip Rugut and Russia’s Irina Timofeyeva won the men’s and women’s titles in the Delhi international half-marathon on Sunday.

Rugut clocked one hour one minute 55 seconds to complete the 21-km race, run through the heart of the Indian capital, to collect the winner’s cheque of $20,000.

His compatriot Duncan Kibet was second and Tanzania’s Martin Sulle third.

Timofeyeva timed 1:10.35 to win the women’s race by some six seconds and receive $15,000. Kenyans Rita Jeptoo and Helen Kimutai were second and third respectively.

Hundreds of people from all walks of life took part in the race which organisers say will be held annually as a build-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the Indian capital.—Reuters
