Donated tents being sold?
ISLAMABAD, Oct 16: Tents donated by private individuals and organisations to a big relief camp set up at the Race Course Park in Rawalpindi are being sold by an officer, it is learnt.
Amara Saeed, a private individual heavily involved in earthquake relief efforts, told this correspondent that the officer by the name of Asif was selling tents at Rs5,500 apiece.
Reportedly the camp received 500 tents from Lahore as a donation a few days ago.
Ms Saeed said she had found out from a colonel, also named Asif, that relief goods were available for volunteers going to the affected areas at the Race Course Park. Later, she was informed by some acquaintance that tents were also up for sale there. Desperately looking for some 30 tents, she sent her brother there.
However, when her brother reported that an officer was selling tents, she got suspicious and alerted Col Asif who told her that should not be happening and he would look into the matter.
When Ms Saeed’s brother demanded a receipt for sale of the tents he was told by the officer that he had sold more than 400 tents so far and no one had asked for a receipt. However, on her brother’s insistence, he said he could instead have the amount deposited into the account number of his superior officer at the Alfalah Bank branch.
