KARACHI, Oct 16: Installations of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation are likely to sustain a great deal of damage in the event of an earthquake in the city.
Analysts maintain that just as the infrastructure of power supply collapsed like a house of cards in the calamity-hit areas, the KESC transmission and distribution system is not likely to fare any better.
But a spokesman for the KESC insisted that no amount of maintenance and upkeep could ensure that the power supply network of a utility remained undamaged in an earthquake.
“There is a crisis management cell in the KESC which would swing into action as soon as a crisis occurs. And there is a well-defined mechanism in place which would ensure that required measures are taken without issuance of directives,” he claimed.
The KESC spokesman added that emphasis would be placed on restoring the damaged transmission and distribution network as quickly as possible.
He argued that even if the KESC had an underground transmission and distribution network, it would sustain a lot of damage in an earthquake.
