Baby’s birth brings joy in quake-hit area

MUZAFFARABAD, Oct 15: One family among the millions of Kashmiris left homeless and in grief by the recent earthquake had unexpectedly happy news on Saturday — a baby girl.

A woman who lost her home and some of her relatives gave birth on Saturday in a medical camp in Muzaffarabad, a week after the massive earthquake left most of the city in rubble.

Dozens of other survivors waiting for treatment in the camp stood nearby and smiled as the baby girl, named Farheem, was born at 4:50 pm (1150 GMT) and wrapped in a green shawl.

“I’m so happy about the birth of my daughter but the memories of the earthquake will always remain in my mind,” first-time mother Nasima Bibi said.—AFP
