Relief goods looted in Battagram

By Our Correspondent

SWABI, Oct 14: Four vehicles loaded with relief goods from Swabi district were looted in Batagram area on Thursday night. This was stated by relief workers who returned from Batagram on Friday with great frustration, saying that their objectives were not achieved.

The Swabi relief team was of 20 volunteers including doctors and paramedical staff.

They said that two flying coaches and two Datsun pick-ups loaded with blankets, foodstuffs, clothing and medicines were looted in Kooza Banda of Batagram which is located about 16 kilometres from the main city. The vehicles were stopped by the people armed with Kalashnikovs.

They told the relief workers that there was no threat to their lives or but they only want blankets and tents because all those who had survived were staying out in the open.

“We later reached Balakot where the bodies were lying everywhere and the army personnel said that they were not ordered to bury the bodies and they are only maintaining discipline,” said a relief worker.

A majority of the people were reaching to see the situation there and not interested in relief work, according to relief workers.

They said that all the people who survived last week’s massive earthquake had refused to return to buildings due to fear that another quake might end their life.

SHOP GUTTED: All medicines turned to ashes when a medical store caught fire on Thursday night.

A local medical store which was located in front of the Topi Civil Hospital suddenly caught fire and in no time it was completely gutted.

However, other stores of the area were saved with the help of the people. But the owner of the store thinks that someone deliberately burnt his shop.
