Six die in Gilgit violence

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Oct 13: Two Rangers personnel and at least four civilians, two of them women, were killed in incidents of violence in Gilgit and suburbs. Twenty-five others were injured.

Sources said violence engulfed the city on Thursday morning when some Shia schoolboys held a demonstration demanding release of a student detained by Rangers in connection with an earlier disturbance.

The students were about to disperse after negotiations with police “but they were encountered by the Rangers at a barricade which led to scuffles and firing in the city,” a witness said.

Curfew was imposed on the city and all its entry routes sealed, leaving thousands of passengers and tourists stranded in hotels and markets.
