KARACHI: Nazims to take oath on Monday

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 13: The newly-elected nazims of all tiers of local government, including Karachi City nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, would be administered oath on Monday.

The city nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, would be administered oath by the District and Sessions Judge Agha Rafique Ahmad, who is also the District Returning Officer of South while other district nazims, town nazims and nazims of union councils would be administered oath by designated judicial officers, including assistant district and sessions judges and civil judges, respectively.

These nazims and council members were elected in three phases of local government elections held on Aug 18, 25 and Oct 6 respectively throughout the country.

Besides the city nazim, 225 council members would also be administered oath. However, the election of the naib nazim will be held at the first council session to be summoned by the nazim at a later date.

The oath-taking ceremony was earlier planned for Oct 10 but it was postponed due to earthquake and now it is scheduled for Oct 17.

However, the venue of ceremony is yet to be decided. In this connection, it is learnt that on Friday the district administration, the election commission and other concerned officials will decide the venue of the oath-taking ceremony.

The oath-taking ceremony of the former city nazim, Nimatullah Khan, was held at Bara Dari, behind Pearl Continental Hotel. In view of the national tragedy, it is most likely that the new city nazim would prefer to take oath in simple ceremony, most probably at the council hall located at the old KMC building.
