KARACHI: Relief fund continues to swell with hefty amounts

KARACHI, Oct 13: Humanitarian relief in cash and kind for earthquake victims continued to pour in from all sides on the fifth consecutive day, Thursday.
While aircraft sorties with medical and other relief supplies, along with doctors and rescue teams, have been on the increase, various national, multinational and overseas firms, as well as individuals, are generously contributing their shares.
OICCI: Members of the Overseas Investors Chamber Of Commerce & Industry have so far donated more than Rs810 million for the relief of earthquake victims.
The member companies have also dispatched goods, services and medicines worth millions of rupees to the affected areas. Employees of OICCI have also donated their one-day salary to the earthquake relief fund.
CITIBANK: The Citibank N.A. Pakistan, a member of the Citigroup, and its employees have pledged US$3 million for relief and rehabilitation of quake victims.
DIB: Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) has donated 0.5 million UAE Dirhams to the President’s Relief Fund For Earthquake Victims-2005.
MOTROLA: Motorola has announced a contribution of US$0.5 million towards the quake relief efforts. The amount includes financial support to Unicef and emergency telecommunication equipment and facilities meant for the affected region.
NOKIA: Nokia has given Euro 100,000 donation to support immediate earthquake relief efforts. It has delivered the amount to the Edhi Foundation.
PLATINUM PHARMACEUTICALS: Platinum Pharmaceuticals has donated life-saving drugs worth Rs3 million for those injured in the massive earthquake. Chairman of the firm has also pledged construction of four schools in the effected areas.
EPB: Officers and staff of the Export Promotion Bureau have contributed their one month salary to the President’s relief fund.
TURKISH ASSISTANCE: As of today, 138 Turkish humanitarian aid workers are operating in Pakistan. A Turkish Air Force plane is scheduled to arrive today with 25 tonnes of humanitarian aid and a filed hospital with 17 doctors and 20 medical personnel. The Turkish Search and Rescue teams and medical teams along with six aircraft have already arrived in Pakistan and taking part in the relief operations in Muzaffarabad. Turkish medical team has vaccinated more than 5,000 quake victims so far. A private sector Turkish airline, MNG, has sent an F-27 aircraft with a relief team. The aircraft would remain in Pakistan for a week for use in cargo transportation. The Turkish government would be sending 15 more military aircraft this month —- one flight a day — with humanitarian assistance.
Meanwhile, Lateef Transport Company has announced Rs3 million for the relief and rehabilitation in the quake-hit areas.
Employees of the Javedan Cement have contributed their two-day salary to the President’s relief fund.
Hinopak Motors are sending 10 truck-loads of relief goods, including blankets and mattresses, for distribution among earthquake victims. Employees of the firm have also donated their one-day salary to the quake relief fund. The IBA Karachi and its staff have donated their one-day salary to the President’s relief fund.
Officers of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) have contributed their two-day salary whereas its lower-grade employees have donated their one-day salary to the relief fund for the quake victims. DHA has also announced a contribution of Rs2.5 million towards the relief and rehabilitation work.
The Association of TV Journalists has delivered a cheque of Rs50,000 to the Sindh governor as donation for the earthquake victims.
