KARACHI: Sindh Assembly meets today

KARACHI, Oct 13: The Sindh Assembly is meeting here on Friday at a time when the entire nation has joined hands in government efforts to provide relief and solace to the earthquake-hit people of the country.

In view of the national tragedy, no fireworks are expected on adjournment motions moved by the leader of the opposition, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro. Through these motions, the opposition wanted to discuss the issue of rigging in the recently concluded local government elections, increasing number of suicides due to economic hardships and deterioration law and order situation.

The parliamentary party of the coalition government, as well as of the opposition, would meet before going to the session in their respective chambers where they would review the situation and formulate their strategies.

The treasury side would meet in the chamber of the chief minister at the Assembly Building while the opposition would meet in the chamber of the leader of the opposition.

Although the order of the day enlists a lengthy agenda spread over 20 business items, the house will adjourn after adopting a joint resolution over the national catastrophe and laying of ordinances.

The bills whose assent was given by the governor and which would also be tabled included: The Sindh Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill, 2005; The Sindh Finance Bill, 2005; The Sindh Civil Servants (Amendment) Bill 2004; and The National University of Management, Computer Science and Technology Bill 1999.

The ordinances which will be laid before the assembly are: The Sindh Health Institutions (Establishment and Management) Ordinance 2005, The Societies Registration (Sindh Amendment) Ordinance 2005; The Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance 2005; The Sindh Transfusion of Safe Blood (Amendment) Ordinance 2005; The Dow University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Ordinance 2005 and the Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Ordinance 2005.

In the agenda, other items included introduction of government bills pertaining to the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences Bill 2005; The Sindh Cotton Control (Amendment) Bill 2005 while seven government bills enlisted for consideration included i) bill to provide for promotion and protection of the interest of consumers; 2) bill to provide for the establishment of an institute at Karachi, known as the Indus Institute of Higher Education 3) bill to amend the Sindh Animals Slaughter Control Act, 1963 4) bill to amend the removal from Service (Special powers) Sindh Ordinance, 2000 5) a bill to amend the Sindh Water Management Ordinance, 2002 6) a bill to provide for the establishment of an institute at Karachi, known as the Pakistan Institute of Management and 7) a bill further to amend the Societies Registration Act 1860.

Other items on the agenda are: to seek extension in the date of presentation of the report of the four special committees on the motions.

One of the motion is by MPA Mohammad Hussain regarding attempts of physical assault with the finance minister while a joint motion was moved by the law and parliamentary affairs minister Iftikhar Chaudhry and leader of the opposition Nisar Ahmad Khuhro regarding amendments to rules of procedures.
