Nato may send troops

ISLAMABAD, Oct 11: The Nato secretary-general has called a special meeting of the 26 members of the organization to discuss the issue of providing quick aid to Pakistan for the victims of Saturday’s earthquake, Voice of Germany reported.

He said German soldiers present in Afghanistan would be utilized in Pakistan.

He said Nato was ready to perform the duty of streamlining foreign aid through clearing house facility.

The United States on Tuesday urged Nato to consider diverting resources from its peacekeeping force in Afghanistan to help victims of the earthquake in Pakistan.

US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns made the call as the alliance finalized plans related to relief after the earthquake.

“We have a lot of allies next door,” he said, referring to the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in Afghanistan, to which Germany and France are the biggest contributors.—Agencies
